When I look at art, I like to play the What Does It Smell/Taste/Sound/Feel Like game. My guesses were always just that, and wondering was the whole point.
The Will Cotton Bakery at Partners and Spade was like an answer key to my game—a live translation of his confectionery paintings, and I scored a 92%. Will’s works do smell like cake batter and taste like a chocolate souffle cupcake as I had previously imagined. But they do not sound like a cluster of jarring Upper East Side women begging for the macaron recipes so their in-house cooks could make them for Thanksgiving.
